Single Cell Discoveries Completes TATAA Biocenter Acquisition

Combined services are available beginning this month.

Why This Matters: Check out Contract Pharma’s Pharmaceutical Industry Mergers & Acquisitions Roundup.

Single Cell Discoveries (SCD), a specialist CRO focusing on discovery transcriptomics, completed its acquisition of TATAA Biocenter. TATAA has global recognition, according to SCD, in quantitative polymerase chain reaction (qPCR), bioanalytical services, and molecular assay development.

Combining the companies, SCD says, creates a rare European specialist CRO taking targets from discovery to results that are regulatory ready. SCD now pairs research grade innovation with validated workflows for use in a clinical or preclinical setting.

SCD and TATAA Workforce

Between SCD in Utrecht, The Netherlands, and TATAA in Gothenburg, Sweden, approximately 50 scientists support pharmaceutical, biotechnology, and academic customers.

A listing of what each company brings to their new union:

  • SCD: single-cell sequencing, spatial transcriptomics, high-throughput RNA sequencing, bioinformatics, multi-omics
  • TATAA: qPCR, digital PCR, proteomics, RNA and DNA sequencing, good laboratory practice and good clinical laboratory practice (GLP/GCLP, respectively)-compliant bioanalysis

The result of these joint capabilities is, targets identified by single-cell sequencing can be confirmed with spatial transcriptomics or proteomics. Following that, the target can become a qPCR or RNA-sequencing assay validated under GLP or GCLP at Gothenburg. And, this all happens without samples or data ever leaving the group.

Perspectives on Acquisition

“This is a natural fit,” SCD CEO Mauro Muraro said. “Customers kept telling us the same thing. They loved working with us on discovery, but had to go elsewhere to validate targets for a clinical program. TATAA closes that gap. As drug developers consolidate outsourcing, working with fewer partners across more of the development pathway, this is the right move.”

“Scientifically, this offers discovery coupled with rigor,” TATAA Scientific Officer Sofia Adolfsson said. “SCD’s single cell and spatial technologies generate exceptional insight, and our GLP/GCLP-compliant qPCR and assay development can now validate those findings. [This happens without customers switching providers, protocols, or data formats partway through a program.”

Combined services are available as of September 2026. Financial terms of the acquisition are not public.
